SYSTEM DOWN FOR MAINTENANCE - Monday morning 1am-3am MVT

On Monday morning, April 30, from 1:00am to approximately 3:00am MVT (Metaverse time), our system will be down for database maintenance. During this time, you will not be able to log into any of the SpotON3D Web worlds, and if you are logged on at the time maintenance starts then you will be logged off. It is very likely that maintenance will be completed earlier than 3am.

We always list our times in MVT, or Metaverse time.  This is always the current time in the United States in the Pacific time zone, which is now Pacific Daylight Time. You can use the converter at http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html to convert this to your local zone. For your convenience, here are the windows for the down time, converted to some common local time zones:

Resident Profile: Davis Woolley

For those of you who are not familiar with him or have not yet had the privilege of speaking with him, I would like to introduce you to Davis Woolley... just another example of the fine talent that we have here at SpotON3D.

Davis is the Virtual Producer for ACT, or Applied Creative Training. He does his work in the field of public health, specifically designing scenarios in online environments that can be used for training purposes. Davis describes himself as a content creator through and through, and likes to have his designs speak for themselves. He wants to help people see the 3DWeb as a major professional tool, and believes that "the best way to learn is to play... and virtual worlds represent a largely untapped and near unlimited source for games that focus on teaching."

Davis was introduced to online worlds while at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He started developing objects and locations intended for use in simulated public health environments, and that expanded to scripting, skins, and eventually sculpts. He says that most of his designs lean toward being utilitarian and realistic, although he admits that the fantasy aspects of virtual worlds are what really draws him in.

Of Davis' builds that I have seen, one of my personal favorites is on ACT Exercise Island, where he has recreated the inside of an international airport terminal, complete with a security check, concourse, and passengers. I especially like the attention to detail that Davis puts into his builds. And I couldn't help but chuckle at the fact that he has set up a grand total of eleven Starbucks restaurants inside the concourse. Other notable builds nearby are a trauma/burn center, and a rail yard depicting a derailed train. A lot of his builds are still works in progress, but they show a great deal of promise.
Above all else, Davis describes himself as a gamer. "Years ago, my kindergarten teacher informed my parents that all I ever want to do is play games. Twenty five years later, I'm still trying to figure out how to make sure that I never stop playing." His college major was in Game Art and Design, and as a project manager for the University of Illinois Chicago's Center for the Advancement of Distance Education, he gravitated towards projects that allowed him to teach via play. He has been an independent web developer for a while now, but continues to pursue these sorts of projects.

Davis feels fortunate to have a loving and supportive wife and daughter, as well as a great network of friends. While offline, he enjoys camping, movies, and video games, as well as western and Japanese animation. In fact, he told me he was planning to attend the Anime Central convention in Rosemont, Illinois, where his daughter "has demanded that we all dress up as Super Mario Bros characters." If you see him, you might want to ask him if they actually followed through on this.

If you're interested in seeing the airport scenario described earlier, then come in world and go to http://3Durl.com/map/veesome/ACT%20Exercise%20Island/138/82/81. From there, you can move around to other builds he has there as well as on the adjoining sims.

Davis is a person of great vision and imagination, and he will be working to develop more interactive training exercises within SpotON3D. We wish him the greatest of success in his work.

Spotlight On Technology: A Dashboard For Reality?

If you've ever played a video game, participated in an MMORPG, or been part of the many online worlds out there, then you are familiar with the idea of superimposing text or graphics on top of a scene. This lets you move around and interact inside of the virtual environment while viewing critical information about what is going on around you, such as damaged sustained or ammo remaining while in a battle situation.

These types of displays are known as heads-up displays, or HUDs, because they let you keep your "head up" while you're navigating your way through the world. They are similar to the dashboard in your car, which places all of the visual indicators in a single location that is close to your field of view, usually below or above the scene. But unlike a dashboard, a HUD display can place text or graphics directly on the screen at any point, and can be arranged in ways that minimize the eye movement required.

While this is great when working with video games and online worlds, what's really exciting is the notion of extending this same technology into reality. This can evidently be accomplished through special lenses, with components that generate the text and images, and then focus it at a different point on your eye than the surrounding light, so that everything appears in focus to you. Like so many other advances, what used to be considered science fiction may soon become commonplace.

A company called Innovega is already working with the military to develop special contact lenses and glasses that will let soldiers see information in front of them as they move around...sort of a reality-based HUD or dashboard. This technology is expected to be available to the public by 2014! Also, Google has thrown its hat into the ring with Project Glass, something only in the planning stages at this point but that would provide the same type of experience. Check out this concept video, showing what Google envisions their product could do:

While the prospect of this is very exciting, I see it opening the door for some potential problems. For example, what would keep students from using this as a way to cheat on exams? Or how unnerving might it be to think that someone could be going through information on you while you are standing there talking to them? In any case, it is a fascinating idea that I'm sure will have many practical applications.

You can read more about these developments here:

Frets Nirvana - Friday 4/20 at 1pm MVT (PDT)
Total Guitar! That's what you hear when you listen to Frets Nirvana. Using acoustic, resonator and electric guitars, Fret's pallette of sound is quite varied and always interesting!

Frets Nirvana grew up in the rock and roll city of Cleveland, Ohio and in his good old band days could be seen hanging out and playing in clubs with the likes of Joe Walsh and the James Gang and Phil Keaggy and Glass Harp. Adding vocals to his wide music variety of tonal colors, a performance by Frets Nirvana offers interesting music for the listener. Frets always rocks the stage when he comes here, and we know that you will have an enjoyable music experience!

Spotlight on Technology: What's So Uncanny About a Valley?

This is a story I first heard of from Colleen Crary, our marketing director and founder of Fearless Nation, the PTSD support group now based right here in SpotON3D. The story isn't so much about technology as it is psychology. Or more specifically, how a psychological principle could affect how we perceive the 3DWeb.

It’s a phenomenon called “The Uncanny Valley”, and it may help explain that bump we have in getting RL folks to try out online worlds.

The Uncanny Valley is a hypothesis in the field of robotics and 3D computer animation, which holds that human observers actually begin to feel revulsion when faced with replicas of themselves that look and move almost, but not perfectly, like actual human beings. The name "valley" comes from the sharp dip in a proposed graph of the positivity of human reaction as a function of a robot's human likeness.

The term was first used by robotics professor Masahiro Mori as Bukimi no Tani Genshō (不気味の谷現象) in 1970. The hypothesis has been linked to Ernst Jentsch's concept of "the uncanny" identified in a 1906 essay, "On the Psychology of the Uncanny.” Jentsch's conception was elaborated by Sigmund Freud in a 1919 essay entitled "The Uncanny" ("Das Unheimliche").

Mori's original hypothesis states that as the appearance and motion of a robot is made more human, a human observer's emotional response to the robot will become increasingly positive and empathic, until a critical point is reached after which the response quickly becomes that of strong revulsion. However, as the robot's appearance continues to become less distinguishable from that of a human being, the emotional response becomes positive once more and approaches human-to-human empathy levels.

The name captures the idea that an almost human-looking robot will seem overly "strange" to a human being, will produce a feeling of uncanniness, and will thus fail to evoke the empathetic response required for productive human-robot interaction. Interestingly, monkeys have also been observed to respond in similar ways when confronted with near-replicas of themselves, lending more credence to the theory.

If you're interested in reading more about this phenomenon, the following articles are worth checking out:

New SpotON3D Scripting Functions Will Help Builders

Fresh from the techno-geek files...
Here's a bit of exciting news for all you builders out there! SpotON3D has just rolled out two new scripting functions that allow you to move individual child prims within a link set in a much more intuitive way.

The functions are called osGetChildPos() and osSetChildPos(). These new functions are unique to SpotON3D, and therefore cannot be used on other platforms, including Second Life or other Opensim-based worlds such as InWorldz.

Unlike other child positioning functions, which are based on the rotation of the root prim, these functions work based on the child prim's rotation, allowing you to move prims along their own local x,-, y- and z-axes. The functions can also be called from the root prim, in which case they allow the root to be moved along its own local axes rather than the region axes.

Any scripts making use of these functions can only move the prim that they are in. That is, a script in one prim cannot uses the functions to move a different prim. This may be addressed as a future enhancement.

If you are interested in the details of how these functions work, you can read about them on our Wiki at:

RESIDENT PROFILE: Michael Somerset

"I've Got an Animation For That..."
This has been the battlecry of Michael Somerset, who has been the in-house animator for SpotON3D for many months now. With 4000+ original animations at his disposal, and the ability to create new ones on demand, he certainly has no problem backing up that statement.

Based on how we see him in world much of the time, one might think that Michael is some superhero (or possibly villain?) lurking about the metaverse. But there is a good reason for his all-black appearance: it gives his avatar what is referred to as a low "avatar rendering cost," or ARC, which helps to make sure that there is nothing on him that will cause lag while he is testing out animations.

Before venturing into online worlds, Michael was a bench carpenter for a large yacht company, building furniture for use inside the yachts. He started his online journey after an accident at work left him partially disabled. He was introduced to Second Life by Linda Kellie, a childhood friend who has worked in online worlds and has recently open sourced much of her own work. While Michael was going through physical therapy and was unable to work, Linda asked him if he would like to try building furniture in Second Life. Since he had time on his hands, and was not used to sitting around, he decided to give it a shot. He picked up on it quickly, and it wasn't long before he realized he would need animations for the furniture. But when he discovered how expensive it would be to purchase a number of good animations, he convinced Linda to show him how to make his own. Within three months, they opened an animations store together known as "Lotsa Balls". It wasn't too long before he was doing well enough to strike out on his own, and that is when he opened his "Ball Mart" animations store.

Michael learned about SpotON3D from another grid owner, who had been complaining that COO Tessa Harrington was "plugging SpotON3D in Second Life." (I suppose this goes to show that any publicity is good publicity!) Michael has since moved his Ball Mart store to SpotON3D, and now serves as our full-time in-house animator. He has been creating many exciting items for us, including snowboards, skis and ice skates for our upcoming SnowyBrook Winter Resort community.

Since coming to SpotON3D, Michael has worked with the staff to learn more about how scripts can be effectively used with animations. This led to him creating something that he calls "Digi-Food." Unlike other food items available in Web Worlds, Digi-Food disappears bit by bit as you eat it. By combining talents in animation, scripting, and sculpts, as well as texturing, he will have new products out very soon. Items nearly finished include a watermelon eating contest, steak dinner, pancake breakfast, apple, Popsicle and many other foods and meals.

In real life, Michael Somerset is Michael Sietz, 50 years old and living on the Oregon Coast. He is a United States Navy veteran of five years, with two kids: a son in college, and a daughter soon to be in college. Although it is never required, Michael likes the fact that many of those within SpotON3D are willing to disclose at least some of their real life information, as it denotes accountability and honesty.

When asked what he would like to accomplish here in SpotON3D, Michael says, "I'm really excited about this Web World and the direction that it's going. If I had my wish, what assistance I can offer would drive SpotON3D to a much better known grid than any previous." We're very fortunate to have Michael here with us, and we very much appreciate the contribution that he makes.

SpotON3D: Stepping Up To Meet Industry Demand

In response to the rising interest from the corporate and educational world to include a 3D component for internal and external business and sales, we are about to unveil WorldWorks™ in addition to our current SpotON3D community. What’s the difference? While SpotON3D is for the traditional virtual 3D world user, WorldWorks™ expands 3DWeb worlds to companies who seek more dynamically interactive customer and staff experiences, while curtailing time and money costs—resources that can be reinvested in their business, notably technology and R&D. Green and seamless, businesses can now meet with clients and conduct internal meetings on demand and in real time.

A Radically Different Approach
You may have noticed that other companies have their own 3D worlds that on the surface look very similar to SpotON3D. These worlds include Second Life and platforms based on the Opensimulator model. We at SpotON3D have always taken a unique approach to what we think of as the 3DWeb, and we feel that we are building a framework here which will transform the technology into a natural extension of the 2D Web pages that we are now accustomed to using on a daily basis. Our approach has been considered radical in the eyes of some, but we truly want to see 3D worlds become an indispensable tool for the day-to-day operation of corporations and educational institutions, and we strongly believe that the steps we are taking will help to accomplish this.

SpotON3D will continue to offer new and fresh venues, products and services for 3DWeb world users and content creators, who will enjoy a stable, low-lag in world experience good for all users, with child-friendly areas, great value for the money, and a staff of friendly people who provide top-notch assistance on demand for all residents and guests. Costs are shared across our resident population, making it the fair and community-minded Web World that we have envisioned since day one.

New Tools and Services That Make Business and Education in 3D A Success
The latest upgrade of our popular EzPrezTools™ give businesses, educators and anyone needing to conduct meetings and presentations a dynamic experience without the headaches and hassles usually associated with online meeting software. With easy and intuitive onboarding of guests, media capabilities, and native support for standard applications such as Microsoft Word/Excel/PowerPoint, PDF, OpenOffice and more, you can bring others in affordably in ten minutes or less and conduct your business in an impactful way.

If you’re able to use Facebook™, then you’re able to use our EzPrezTools™. Features include presentation screens and whiteboards, as well as multifunctional picture frames to upload logos, house style elements and marketing material directly to your 3DWeb office. Thanks to this technology, your real world office seamlessly merges into your 3D global meeting spot.

World on a Webpage™ technology gives you the power to login from any website or social network. This makes our Web Worlds highly suitable as low-entry 3D extensions to any website or intranet environment. Easily meet with people from anywhere in the world in 3D, using a doorway on your Website that takes you to your next meeting or class. Combine this with the ease of Facebook™ instant ID registrations, and you have an easy way to bring guests or clients onboard.

HotSwap Scenes™ allow you to swap out full regions layouts with a single click, as well as to dynamically add and remove objects from the scene. This means that you can seamlessly switch from an office center to a demo setup to a virtual replication of your factory, or to anything you can imagine, as long as the layout has been created before and saved into your HotSwap Scenes™ library. Besides creating your own, you can also buy prefab HotSwap Scenes™ through SpotON3D’s marketplace. Our library of available scenes will continue to grow, so that we can provide our customers with a wide variety of selections.

BoostCloud™ Technology allows you to have your region serviced by cloud computing. Thanks to this technology, you will be able to host up to 125 individuals simultaneously on your region. BoostCloud™ is an on-demand service and can be switched on/off at any given time. This service is invoiced at a low hourly rate, and you pay only for the time that you use the service.

Facing Forward in Growth and Meeting Consumer Needs
WorldWorks™ now merges the 2D and 3DWeb for multiple uses, from recreation to serious business and education interests. This creates jobs with a low carbon footprint, helping all users expand their personal and professional experience. The future never looked brighter.

Stay tuned for the new and evolving horizons that WorldWorks™ is opening for everyone!

Frets Nirvana Performs at the Blue Shanty - Friday, Apr 6, 2012

Total Guitar! That's what you hear when you listen to Frets Nirvana. Using acoustic, resonator and electric guitars, Fret's pallette of sound is quite varied and always interesting!

Frets Nirvana grew up in the rock and roll city of Cleveland, Ohio and in his good old band days could be seen hanging out and playing in clubs with the likes of Joe Walsh and the James Gang and Phil Keaggy and Glass Harp. Adding vocals to his wide music variety of tonal colors, a performance by Frets Nirvana always offers interesting music for the listener.

Frets always rocks the stage when he comes here. He pours his heart and soul into what he does, and it definitely comes through on stage. Check Frets out in in SpotON3D...you are guaranteed an enjoyable music experience!

Come on down and listen to Frets Nirvana perform an hour of fine rock/blues/jazz this Friday, April 6, from 1pm-2pm MVT/Pacific, at the Blue Shanty stage in Shanty Town. The stage is in SpotON3D at:
http://3Durl.com/map/spoton3d/ Shanty%20Town/65/58/35.

The Blue Shanty always strives to bring you the best in entertainment. These are the real deal folks, not pre-recorded performers, or stand in artists. They search and scour the metaverse every day to enrich your Web World experience!
