Check your Standalone Viewer - Mandatory Upgrade July 5, 2012

Our standalone viewer (the one that you download from our Web site) has undergone many fixes and enhancements over the past month, and it is very important to make sure you're running the latest version of the software.  Running on older clients subjects you to unexpected crashes, as well as other errors. The latest Windows version is 1.1.8, and the latest Mac version is 1.0.11.

CHECK YOUR VIEWER to make certain you are running the latest available version. The version number is displayed in the lower right portion of the login screen, or if you're already logged in you can find it by clicking HELP and then ABOUT from the menu.  If you are running a Windows viewer with a version number less than 1.1.8, or if you are on a Mac viewer with a version number less than 1.0.11, then YOU MUST DOWNLOAD THE LATEST VERSION from our Web site at https://spoton3d.com/viewer/download. After July 5, you will no longer be able to log in using an earlier version of the viewer.

Also, SpotON3D no longer supports the Phoenix-SpotON3D viewer.  In our ongoing efforts to give you the experience you want and deserve, we will continue to incorporate as many of the Phoenix-specific features that we can into our standard viewer.  We only keep the Phoenix-SpotON3D viewer available as a tool for restoring objects that were previously backed up using the Phoenix XML format. If you are still using Phoenix-SpotON3D as your viewer, then please download and start using the standard viewer from our Web site right away.

New 3DWeb Portal Plugin/Wizard!

Residents, Educators and Businesses hosted by WorldWorks or SpotON3D will enjoy unprecedented customization in the near future with our new 3DWeb Plugin Wizard.  This simple-to-use wizard will place a button onto your Website or blog which, when someone clicks it, will log them into WorldWorks/SpotON3D!

The wizard offers many exciting features:
  • It lets your Web site visitors get online in WorldWorks  / SpotON3D , right from your Web site.
  • It’s as simple as adding a small snippet of Javascript to the HTML of any Web page to which you have editing rights, in the same way that you embed YouTube  videos.
  • If you’re a Premium member, you can set up the button to send your Website visitors directly to your very own region/3DWeb space, turning it into an extension of your Web page!
Business and educational users can try out the WorldWorks version of the wizard at https://worldworks.net/world/get_your_plugin_here/.  If you’re a recreational user, please try out the version at https://spoton3d.com/world/get_your_plugin_here/.

We have made considerable improvements to our browser-based 3DWeb Portal Plugin, compared to our previous alpha version. For one, it has a much wider and taller client window. The window also sits on top of your current Web page using Lightbox technology, much like photos are handled in Facebook. Finally, you are able to resize the viewer window by simply resizing the browser. Please feel free to try out the 3DWeb Portal Plugin by going to http://test.spoton3d.com and clicking on the “Jump Into the 3DWeb 4 Free” button.

For those who have enjoyed using our alpha plugin via 3DURL.com, we want to say thank you for your bug reports and the terrific case studies we’ve seen using this groundbreaking technology. In our continued effort to implement new upgrades to our platform systems and stay compatible with our upcoming system changes, the alpha plugin project will be discontinued.. Those using our technology to further their projects are encouraged to contact us for continued service by emailing us at contact@worldworks.com.

Michael Somerset's new DIGI-FOOD - Adding Realism to your 3DWeb Experience

Michael Somerset is SpotON3D's in-house animator who also heads up his own company AniMa3D, which produces realistic quality animations.  In this video, Michael introduces his new product called DIGI-FOOD... food that disappears from your plate a bit at a time as you "eat" it, producing a visual image that can greatly enhance your in-world experience.

Besides being available for purchase by individuals, Digi-Food will be incorporated as a standard part of many tables, stoves, and other elements provided in our upcoming communities.  This combined with a delivery system being developed will make for some amazingly realistic scenarios... for example, a server sets a dish in front of you, a fork appears in your hand, and you then eat the food while watching it disappear.  We will provide more details on these features in the near future.

After seeing this demonstration, we think you will agree that Digi-Food will be a huge step toward giving visitors to SpotON3D a much more immersive 3D experience!

Michael’s food is part of our beta testing program.  If you are interested in helping us out by participating in beta testing, please get in touch with us at contact@spoton3d.com.

A Great Performer with an Amazing Background
Celtic is a seasoned performer who has been pleasing audiences for three years in Second Life as CelticMaidenWarrior Lancaster, and now brings her awesome talent to SpotON3D! She plays all your old favorites from America, Eagles, Carol King, Carly Simon, Van Morrison....etc, etc. She knows 2001 tunes, and if she can't do the song you request, she is sure to be able to substitute one you won't be disappointed in. She even learns songs that her fans have requested she learn.

Celtic taught herself to play the guitar in 1971 when she was 13 years old. Her first performance was at an 8th grade talent contest, for which she sang Kris Kristofferson’s “Me and Bobby McGee”. She spent her teen years in the middle of her bed with her John Denver song books. When she left home to join the Air Force, she married and quickly started a family which left little time for guitar playing. During the mid 1980’s she found comfort in performing worship music for her mission church in Okinawa, Japan, as well as singing in a contemporary Christian band which toured around the island. She performed in the USOs for American Military servicemen and their families. Celtic has also broadcast live on Japanese radio from the Okinawa Zoo, and Botanical Gardens. She traveled to the Philippines and performed for 5000 people in a dilapidated athletic auditorium, and traveled around the barrios sharing music with the local people. Now Celtic is playing everything from folk to classic rock and easy listening, and rounds it off with traditional Celtic ballads (which she does acapella).

Spotlight on Technology: Digitize an Entire Scene

To use the 3DWeb effectively, it helps to immerse users in a scene that seems real to them -- something that they can relate to easily. It takes someone with a special eye and skills to create scenes that truly draw you out of your world, and into the 3D world on your screen. And even if you have someone with those talents, it can often take weeks or months to create the scene that you are looking for.
Now imagine that you own an industrial plant, and would like to give a tour of your facility to prospective clients or investors -- many of whom may be scattered across the country or around the world. A 3D online tour would be ideal, but again something like this can take a long time to develop and set up.
Now, consider this: Wouldn't it be great if you could just wave a device around a room, and have it take a "picture" of everything... except that it would automatically create 3D models of everything in the room, which you could then upload into the 3DWeb and set up in a relatively short time?
That's the idea behind a scanning device being developed by a Silicon Valley startup company named MatterPort.   While it's not the first of its kind, the claim is that this device, once in production, will be 20 times faster and 18 times cheaper than other 3D scanners on the market.
The video clip above gives a brief demonstration of how the device should work. The prototype is based on Kinect technology, but few technical details beyond this are available at this time.  I was also unable to find a timeline for when the product is expected to be released.  Matterport unveiled their product on March 27 at the 2012 Y Combinator Demo Day in Mountain View, California, and they are now in early beta testing with selected companies.
It sounds as if this device may not reach the exact precision of much more expensive 3D scanners, but it may be reasonable enough for most purposes. If affordable technology such as this can produce 3D renderings which can then be brought into a 3DWeb platform such as SpotON3D, this will greatly simplify the set up of scenes which have the potential to truly amaze your customers, clients, and others.

For more information on this scanner, please visit the Matterport Web site at http://matterport.com/. You can also check out an article on the scanner at singularityhub.com.

Help Us Test Our New 3DWeb Plugin!

Hey everyone, great news -- we've got a new version of our 3DWeb Portal Plugin ready to test. It features more vertical screen area and some important bug fixes. And we need YOUR help testing it out!

The version that we're testing at this time is for Windows users. We will have a Mac version ready soon.

We would like to have as many members of our community try this new plugin, and give us feedback.

To try it out, please go to http://test.spoton3d.com, and click on the "Jump Into the 3DWeb 4 Free" button found in the upper right (just to the right of the social media icons).

After clicking this button, you should see the following:
Click on the "Download WorldWorks Plugin" link on this screen to start the download process.
Next, you should see a screen telling you to open or run the file.  This is a typical screen that you get whenever you are asked to install something on your computer, and the exact procedure that you follow will depend upon which browser you are using.    Here is the screen for Internet Explorer:

For this, you would click the "Run" button to begin the installation.

On Mozilla Firefox, you would click "Save File".

On Google Chrome, you would click on the arrow next to the file name at the bottom of the browser window, and choose Open.  Then you would click "Run" on the next dialog.

The installation should then proceed normally, with a progress bar to track the percentage complete.

IMPORTANT:  If you receive an error during the installation, then you will need to uninstall your current SpotON3D standalone viewer, and then download and install the most current version of the standalone viewer from our Web site at https://spoton3d.com/viewer/download/. Once the download and install have finished, then please try installing the plugin again. NOTE:  this error message will normally show up if you are running version 1.1.6 of the standalone viewer.

If you are running Windows Vista or 7, you may also get a User Account Control message (the box that appears whenever you need admin rights to install).  If this happens, just click Yes to proceed.

At the end of the installation, you should get a sign-in screen on top of your Web browser:

Enter your avatar's name and password in the boxes provided, then click the Login button.  You should be logged in normally, and will land at the SpotON3D Welcome Hub.

We hope to get as many members of our community as we can to try out this new plugin version, so if you haven't done so already, please download it and try it out in world.  And by all means, let us know what you think!  If you need assistance, or need to report a problem, please email support@spoton3d.com.

Resident Profile: Scripter Creator

We see a wide range of people come into SpotON3D, each unique in their own way and bringing with them their own particular set of talents.  Well, since we at SpotON3D are planning to implement mesh capabilities on our platform in the near future, we are particularly grateful for the talents that Scripter Creator brings with him!

This rather unique photo of Scripter (published with his permission) gives you a glimpse into his life.  He's an electrical engineer and inventor, who makes working prototypes of his patentable ideas.  He also makes musical electronic components, another of his interests.  But what's really attracted our attention is a tool that he developed within days of coming here... one that can transform regular primitive shapes into mesh objects!

Scripter's prim2mesh tool presently handles the conversion of boxes, cylinders and spheres with all tortures except for slice and hole shape (and twist for spheres), and he is continuing to add new features to it.  As shown in the illustration at right, the tool generates a series of dots around the object that you wish to convert, and you can manipulate the shape by moving the dots.  As it is currently set up, the tool generates a Wavefront (*.obj) file that appears in local chat (only viewable by the one using the tool).  This data can be copied and pasted into an external file, where it can be then be prepared and uploaded into SpotON3D in mesh format.  This will be an easy-to-learn tool that anyone can use to create many types of mesh objects, without needing specialized knowledge of 3D modeling programs.  How great is that?!

Please note that SpotON3D is still in the preliminary stages of evaluating mesh, and we do not yet permit individuals to upload mesh objects.  However, those wishing to test mesh capabilities are welcome to get in touch with us at contact@spoton3d.com, and we can upload models for you.

The prim2mesh tool started out as a limited-ability giveaway item that he made in Second Life, and he has greatly expanded upon it here.  He plans to place the tool on the SpotONSynergy marketplace soon with an option to send output to email rather than local chat, which will allow more data to be captured, resulting in higher resolutions.  The best way to do this would be through a web server, but since he does not have access to one at the moment, this will do the job nicely.

Scripter has also just finished a spiral staircase maker, as well as a much-needed boat script that has some real kick to it!  Both of these products are available on our marketplace, SpotONSynergy.

Scripter wants to give "a great big thank-you to all who create ... I am eternally grateful to all who enhance my life by creating for me.  Here's wishing all of us the very best that SpotON3D has to offer!"

Be sure to check out Scripter's products on SpotONSynergy by clicking Here.
